Information Security for the Busy Entrepreneur or Manager
Shifting workforce
Not only do we face the challenge of focusing on teams to work efficiently—social media and text/media messaging can be a source of data leakage. The economy is shifting, as is the workforce. A mobile phone is more personal than an employee’s handbag, so we have to tread carefully around these topics. Some workplaces have taken the step of banning personal devices altogether; however, this is not an easy concept to introduce, particularly to a younger workforce.
Here's some questions and "Hands On" exercises you can use to help you improve the security posture of your organization where cell phones and mobile devices are concerned.
How many employees (and sub-contractors, vendors, etc.) are in your organization on a day-to-day basis with a personal mobile device?
Does your organization have a written policy around the use of personal cell phones? Does your policy include clearly-defined sanctions for violation of your policy?
Do your business practices (i.e. employee on-boarding, employee training, and vendor agreements) make your policies clear to all concerned parties?
Do you have critical information that should never be accessed by a personal mobile device—for example, the Personal Health Information of a client or patient?
Do you have a good sense of what is “healthy” use versus unhealthy use of mobile technology?
