Moving your application to the cloud? Awesome, well maybe.
Software development today looks substantially different today from a decade ago. Don't believe me? Look at the job postings.
Skills in demand today are all "full stack web life cycle" etc.
As the market's skill sets shift, so do the business models.
Today a business plan needs to include monthly recurring revenue (MRR). In software speak, that means Cloud, or Software as a Service (SaaS).
Back in the stone age when Fred Flintstone purchased "perpetual" software licenses and paid maintenance for updates and tech support, he also had to pay for hardware and perform his own backups.
What about when you and I shift to the cloud? Well, generally speaking, all of that is "included". Or, at least we hope it is.
Before you do go "to the cloud" and congratulate yourself that you no longer have to manage local backups, be sure to ask your vendor a few questions:
1. Please tell me your backup strategy. Where are they kept? Who checks them? When was the last time you had to restore from a backup?
2. Please let me know what kind of maintenance schedule you maintain. What kind of down-time can I expect?
3. If I want to move from your cloud application to a competitor's, how do I get my data? Is there a fee?
