Windows updates can be a pain, we know it as well as you. While it is true that in the past Windows has released bad patches that seemingly do more harm than good, that is not the full story. Patches have been known to cause issues on Windows even prior to Windows 10. Just last year, a Windows 7 update caused networking to break on some computers, leaving many machines offline and unable to connect to the internet.
The vast majority of patches do not cause issues, but rather fix serious security flaws, provide new features, etc. Just because patches can cause issues does not mean they should NOT be installed. It is the responsibility of your IT department to implement an effective patch management system. Many IT professionals, including navitend, moderate the patches released to clients in order to minimize the chances of deploying a patch that will cause issues.
Important Windows Patch Management Practices
Appropriate patch release: In many cases, we do not release brand new patches to be installed for at least 2 weeks after release date. This gives Microsoft time to become aware of potential issues and un-publish the patch.
Test patches before deployment: Test patches on a small sample of computers before deploying to the rest of the organization. At navitend, we deploy patches to our own computers first. If issues occur we can prevent the patches from being deployed to our customers.
Do not install preview/testing patches: In general, only deploy patches that are final, full-release versions. Preview/test patches should only be deployed if it is suspected that another issue will be resolved by deploying the patch. In this case, the test patch should only be deployed to the relevant computers.
Be ready to pull patches when necessary: When issues are encountered as a result of a patch deployment that navitend has made, we are capable uninstalling it.
