Let’s be honest and recognize that for most of us, this year will be different. We may not be able to break bread with our usual crew, or we may not have the money for a feast. We may be missing loved ones. Many of us have mixed feelings about the holiday altogether.
So, what can be done to make this season more than just manageable, or even something to look forward to? The first step is to take a breath. Acknowledge that 2020 will be different and give thanks!
Embrace the outdoors
Take advantage of the beautiful fall weather and take the festivities outdoors. Participate in a Turkey Trot or go for a walk together as a family on Thanksgiving morning. This is a great way to jumpstart a day focused on food, and there is always such a positive and happy energy buzzing around these races. Everyone is looking to break a sweat and enjoy each other’s company
Create a new family recipe
While the Thanksgiving staples will always remain, it’s nice to create a recipe that you can carry on as a tradition and make every year. It will be great to continue the family recipe tradition of "Thanksgiving 2020" and when the kids are old enough they can look forward to making the recipe with their families.
Share what you are thankful for
We live in an age where there is no shortage of bad news everywhere we look. Use Thanksgiving as a day to focus on the positive things in your life and to appreciate all the things we have to be thankful for. Thanksgiving dinner is a great time to go around the table and have everyone share what they are most thankful for. It is always fun to hear everyone’s different answers, and it may even get your shy child talking and participating!

Do a "What are you Thankful for Craft
Have family members, including children, make a “I’m thankful for _______” ornament or other decorative item to hang on a tree or display somewhere for eveyone to see.
Spend quality time together on Black Friday
I’ve never been one to partake in the craziness of Black Friday. Rather than indulge in the Black Friday Shopping (more than likely it'll have to be on-line this year), spend it with each other. Spend the day cuddled up on the couch watching your favorite movies, stay in your pajamas all day or play your favorite games. Go for a family hike if the weather permits; we always loved going for a hike the day after Thanksgiving. If you are celebrating Christmas, go cut down a tree as a family and spend the day decorating for the upcoming holiday.
Think outside the box
Throw out your traditional playbook and opt for an entirely different holiday! Maybe cook a lobster instead of a turkey or continue your family's Thanksgiving traditions because they are comforting in these uncertain times. Perhaps volunteering or look for other thoughtful ways to show your family, friends, or community that you care even if you can't do it in person.
