Comfortably Numb

Comfortably Numb

I've got a (deary loved) child that has an odd behavior pattern when they are feeling ill. Lets just say that you would think they are dying when sick -- not a small amount of drama.

Here is how this plays out:

Child cries.

We scour the house looking for children's tylenol -- or something similar.

If we do find a bottle of something -- and it has invariably expired -- like 10 years ago.

While you may be thinking, "sure, those medicines don't really expire", we've found something better.

To reduce the drama we reach for the kindle or ipad and pull up an episode of Shaun the Sheep. I'm not kidding. Put Shaun the Sheep on and this child goes from their death bed to totally distracted and not feeling ill at all. While this is fun to watch (not to mention the drama goes waaaay down), it got me thinking -- where in our businesses are we feeling "comfortably numb"?

As a computer and network support company working in the fast paced Northern New Jersey market, we have run into a few scenarios where we meet prospective customers who are comfortably numb and don't have a full appreciation for the precariousness of their situation. Here are some examples:

They have a backup which they have never tested.

They have a "firewall" but don't know who maintains it.

They have a website but don't know who manages their domain name.

They have a website with a content management system (i.e. think WordPress), but have never updated it since it was constructed years ago.

They have workstations running an older, out of date operating system and can no longer receive security patches.

They have a WiFi system that guests can use that is not segregated from their corporate network. Oh yeah, the password is "Password123", is enabled 24/7 and is available in the parking lot. Not kidding.

I could go on.

Are you "comfortably numb" with respect to your network's security? Not sure? Give us a call. We can take a quick look at your network and make some recommendations for securing your network.

Gotta go, have to finish this episode. Love this show.
