2018 Cybercrime Recap

2018 Cybercrime Recap

Here are 5 threats from the past year your organization should be aware of:

Ransomware will attack companies of all sizes - the attack encrypts your data and asks for a ransom payment in order to restore it. Last year’s WannaCry ransomware attack was famous for infecting more than 230,000 computers in 150 countries. The average cost of ransomeware attacks is $133,000 according to Sophos, a security software and hardware company.

Phishing attempts have been around for years, but they are showing no signs of declining - Ever see an email asking for you to reset your credentials? Maybe you got an email from “Microsoft” alerting you to log into your office 365 account? How about that scammer pretending to be Cheryl from accounting who requested access to all your personal files? Email is one of the cheapest ways for scammers to get personal with a company’s employees. Phishing scams target 3 out of 4 organizations every single day.

Crypto-mining malware is a more recent attack trend that really came to light over the past year - Victims will experience the effects of slow computer performance and they do not have a clue as to why. Did you ever think a decreased computer performance could be a sign of a malware infection?

Cybersecurity experts believe that 2019 could see a major increase in criminal hijacking of computers - By infecting computers with viruses, cybercriminals can use their processing power for their own needs, including the mining of cryptocurrency.

Another favorite among cybercriminals? BEC Scams - This scam often makes use of social engineering tactics to craft a convincing spear-phishing email that impersonates key executives, mostly for financial gain. It is crucial that organizations have processes in place for these types of unusual requests. Employees should be trained to question and verify requests for unusual payment to sending the funds. Often, when payments are made to a BEC scam, the funds are transferred to an overseas bank account and are never recovered.

More and more organizations are moving to the cloud. Every new application that moves to the cloud means trusting a new vendor, their software and their security to protect your data. Users can access cloud applications and their data from anywhere, as long as they have their credentials. How do you ensure that nobody is inappropriately accessing your data? If somebody has access to your data, what applications are they using, and what are they doing with it? These are the challenges of the cloud enabled world we live in and will lead to a rise in cyber security attacks in the future. Remember to set strong, unique passwords on ALL your accounts to keep your data safe.
